Authorisation versus consumer protection

Ask which protection applies

Authorisation describes a particular entity and permitted activities. Complaint mechanisms, client-money rules and compensation have their own scope and eligibility. A group may include several companies with different regimes. Start from the entity in your agreement, product and client category rather than an international brand name.

Do not treat compensation as a trading guarantee

Check eligibility with the relevant scheme or authority independently. Market losses are different from a covered firm failure or valid service complaint. Even a genuine authorised provider offers products with risks. TradAdvise reports recorded evidence and limitations; it does not decide your compensation entitlement or certify a transaction as safe.

Questions to resolve before opening an account

Which company signs the agreement? Which regulator covers the activity? Are you a retail client? Which complaint body and compensation scheme, if any, are named? Is the exact website officially associated? Keep unanswered questions visible. A familiar brand cannot fill these gaps by itself.

Read the protection as a specific claim

When a provider mentions a complaint body or compensation arrangement, identify the exact scheme, member entity and relevant eligibility statement. Then consult that body independently. Do not infer coverage from a group logo or from the fact that another customer used the scheme. Your product, activity, client category and circumstances may differ. Keep the original claim and the official explanation together so any unresolved difference remains visible.

Separate three different questions

First, is the actual provider authorised for the service? Second, is this website or contact genuinely associated with that provider? Third, what remedy, if any, applies to the particular problem? A yes to the first does not answer the second, and neither decides the third. This distinction matters especially when an impersonator uses the licence of a genuine firm: the official record may be real while the claimed relationship is false or unresolved.

Keep the remedy enquiry factual

For a complaint, identify the contract, service, event, payment and requested resolution. Ask the relevant body to confirm its remit rather than assuming every financial loss is compensable. If it declines, preserve the reason and ask which appropriate route remains available. TradAdvise’s role is to present evidence and questions clearly; only the competent body or professional can assess the actual entitlement, legal claim or remedy in your circumstances.
