Forex and CFD trading risks

Leverage changes exposure

A margin deposit can control a much larger position. Small market movements can therefore have large effects on your trading funds. Costs, financing, slippage and rapid price changes can further affect outcomes. Regulation concerns the provider and conduct rules; it does not ensure that a strategy will make money.

Read the actual terms

Check client classification, close-out rules, product costs, negative balance terms and the legal counterparty. Do not assume offshore entities offer the same retail protections as an EU or UK firm in the same group. TradAdvise does not assess personal suitability. Consider independent authorised advice before committing money you cannot afford to lose.

Separate product risk from identity risk

A confirmed firm and website address answer who you may be dealing with. They do not answer how much a position can lose, what costs apply or whether you understand it. Keep a separate product-risk checklist rather than treating a positive identity check as approval to deposit or increase leverage.

Describe the exposure before focusing on profit

Write down the product, position size, margin committed, leverage offered and currency in which gains or losses are calculated. If those terms are unclear, ask for an explanation before trading. A small initial payment is not necessarily the full economic size of the position. Keep an illustration of a loss as well as a gain; otherwise, a demonstration may show only the favourable side of the same market movement.

Identify the cost structure

Find where the agreement describes spreads, commissions, overnight financing and currency conversion. Ask which charges arise when opening, holding and closing the position, and which may change. A promise of no commission does not answer whether other costs apply. Keep a copy of the relevant schedule for the exact account and entity, rather than assuming every account under the same brand has the terms in an advertisement.

Keep verification and financial choice independent

A broker check cannot determine how a position fits your income, debts, savings or experience. If you are being pressured to deposit essential money or borrow to continue trading, pause the conversation. Read the product and account documents away from the sales environment and seek appropriately authorised independent advice where needed. Do not interpret a demo-account gain, positive customer review or verified domain as an assessment that you can afford the possible loss.
